The Truth About Your Period
Posted on
From adolescence, periods are a part of many of our lives. But have you ever wondered how they actually work?
In this post, you’re about to find out. The infographic below describes the various phases your body goes through as you work your way through the cycle. It explains why sometimes you look and feel great while, at others, all you want to do is curl up and go to bed.
The menstrual cycle begins soon after your period finishes. Biologists call this the follicular phase. During this phase, your body starts to produce more estrogen which prepares your ovaries to release the egg. As a general rule, those of us at this stage tend to have a positive mood, increased energy and better skin. It’s the good part of the menstrual cycle.
Once estrogen and other hormones, such as follicle stimulating hormone, reach a certain point, the egg is released and we enter the ovulation phase. This stage is characterised by higher sex drive, growing confidence and skin that looks positively lush. For many, it is the best part of the menstrual cycle.
However, unfortunately, it gives way to the luteal phase. Hormone changes mean that your energy levels start to lower and your skin becomes oilier and more congested.
Lastly comes the menstrual phase. Many women have period pain for between two and five days at this stage.
